I've tried downloading GPX files and am getting some sort of HTML file. I tried the suggestion made in the previous download comment, but I still just get the HTML file. Is the file useable? How do I get it into my Garmin Rino 520 HCX?

Frustrated, heading to Death Valley Friday and can't get any files Sad

Hi atokarchik,

Can you post a link to the tracks you're trying to download so we can have a look?

Thanks,

Daniel

I find that Garmin is very picky about the format of the GPX file and won't load some GPX from this and other websites.

When that happens, I load the GPX file into another program - I use the free TrackMaker - and make a small change then save it.

Usually it then loads in Mapsource.

I was trying to download some Death Valley tracks. I didn't even get a download on my computer, it just opened up another web page with what looked like HTML. Here's an example of what I get:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
-<gpx xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0 http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0/gpx.xsd" xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" creator="GPSBabel - http://www.gpsbabel.org" version="1.0"><time>2007-11-07T15:59:00Z</time><bounds maxlon="-113.048483333" maxlat="36.805850000" minlon="-114.095466667" minlat="36.220800000"/>-<trk><name>Run to the Rim '07</name>-<trkseg>-<trkpt lon="-113.876733333" lat="36.763333333"><ele>1656.000000</ele><time>2007-06-19T23:49:19.380Z</time></trkpt>-<trkpt lon="-113.876483333" lat="36.763466667"><ele>1662.000000</ele><time>2007-06-19T23:49:29.380Z</time>

Looks like a configuration problem on the computer or in the browser. First, can you post a link to the page on gpsxchange.com so others can confirm? Second, try going to the same page with a different browser. Finally, you might try re-installing a package that understands gpx files, e.g. Basecamp, so that it configures your browser/computer to hand gpx/gdb files off to it.

Not sure what happened to my last post. I do have the latest versions of Basecamp and Map Source, unfortunately I still get the HTML. I will try a different browser. In the mean time, I was trying to download the GPX file from this location:

I tried downloading a gpx file using Firefox instead of IE and it worked fine. Peculiar. Oh well! Thanks again.
