I currently use my old e-trex vista and have mapsource 2008 topo that I route on the computor and download onto my e-trex. This works, but if I want to change course or find an alternate route while on a ride, I have no way of routing without my computer.

Is "routable" meaning that the gps unit has the capability to select a route like I do at home on the computer? Usually I just follow roads on mapsource setting waypoints along the roads to follow them. Then I download to the gps as just a bunch of waypoints, no roads. I have no idea a road is closed or washed out until I ride it. Therefore having the map on a gps like that on my computer, and being able to follow it on the screen to see if it intersects where I need it to, would be awsome.

I'm sure I'd figure out the process once in hand. I just dont know what I need that has this capability.

You can transfer routes made on a PC to the Etrex Vista and it will navigate them as "Direct" or "Off-Road" routes. Follow-road (auto-routing) wasn't a feature of the old Etrex models.

You can also create a route directly on the GPS - rather than explain, download the Manual here (http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/eTrexVista_OwnersManual.pdf) and check page 41.

I understand that I can create a rout on the gps, however the map on my e-trex is lame and the mapsource on the computer is not lame.

Is there a unit that will let me create a detailed route like I do on the computer, on my gps in the field?

Read this article, it may be helpful:

As a newbie myself, I started with it, it made everything pretty clear for me.
