Topofusion (www.topofusion.com) isn't free, but for less than $50 you can enjoy these advantages over Mapsource:

1 -- In Mapsource, it's easy to edit a route by dragging waypoints to a new location. It's not easy to edit a track, however, because in Mapsource you can't drag a trackpoint to a new position. In TopoFusion, just click, drag and save.

2 -- In Mapsource, you can't (easily) convert a route to a track or a track to a route. Topofusion does both quickly and easily. And if your preference is to use tracks, not routes -- at the computer and on the bike -- you're going to love Topofusion. Let's face it, most GPS units can store 10 times more trackpoints than waypoints. The eTrex, for example, can store 10,000 trackpoints, but only 500 waypoints. For long rides, or rides with lots of turns, you can break the ride into several tracks without exceeding the trackpoint maximum for your GPS. And still have relatively small distances between one point and another. Which means you can stay closer to the intended course, and not miss turns. And trackpoints do not clutter the GPS display, whereas waypoints do.

Let's say you are designing a long ride, for example, but all you can find are routes for the various sections that make up your course. In Mapsource, you'll have to laydown a new track with the track draw tool by moving your mouse pointer to every waypoint in each route until the entire track is drawn.

In TopoFusion, just click anywhere on the route with the Profile-Playback tool, right click the highlighted track and save. You're done. And Topofusion uses the gpx format, which makes it's easy to share tracks with other riders who need to convert your ride data to some non-Garmin format...
